The unpopular truth about the Law of Attraction

Updated: Apr 6, 2023

Most of you will have heard of book and film The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, which is all about the Law of Attraction (LOA) and how our thoughts become things. One of the key things that I think is missing from a lot of the things I have read on LOA is that it isn’t just about your thoughts – it requires taking action towards what you want. It isn’t just about thinking about what you want to be different. Whilst your thoughts and mindset are important, it is the action you take that will help you to actually achieve your goals.

So, if you are stuck in a job you don’t enjoy there’s no point just thinking about getting a new job, you need to take action towards getting one. Dust off your CV, get it re-written, put yourself out there, apply for jobs, get more proactive on Linked in. If you are just thinking about getting a new job, chances are nothing will change any time soon.

The same goes for any of your other goals – want to lose weight? Eat less and move more. Earn more money? Start a side-hustle. You get the idea.

I know this is an unpopular truth because it’s much easier to dream about winning the lottery or having some other way of changing your life that doesn’t involve changing what you do – but in the words of Wilson Phillips ‘no-one can change your life except for you’.

I am a huge fan of taking baby-steps towards achieving your goals. Rome wasn’t built in a day so it is worth looking at a big goal you might have and breaking it down into smaller tasks and actions that you can take. Everything big starts small is a saying that I remind myself regularly! So, if I want to write another book, it involves making time and sitting in front of my laptop to write.

The thing I find is that we can make excuses for why we don’t do things – we can all be ‘busy’ and life can and does get in the way. But if it is something you really, really want to achieve – believe me, you will make time for it. It might only be an hour a week that you schedule to do something that helps you get closer towards your desires – that is an hour more than last week.

Of course, your mindset is important, and I recommend starting with gratitude for what you already have and what is going well for you right now. Gratitude is a great way of shifting any negative feelings of lack about what you have right now to acknowledging what is going well for you. You can also write down your goals as if they have already happened – this can also get you clear on what you really want.

Examples include:

· I love where I am living and feel so safe and secure

· I'm so happy to be doing work I feel fulfilled by

· I'm so grateful that I'm surrounded by supportive people who want the best for me

You can then even say these out loud as affirmations, which is another way of energetically aligning to what you want. I am not saying that woo-woo doesn’t work – far from it, I am a huge fan of the law of attraction. The key is the steps and actions you take towards achieving your goals – not just lying down and thinking about them. What action can you take today that will help you get one step closer to what you want?
